The five main groups
The visa-required countries are divided into five main groups based on a general assessment of the risk that people from these countries will not leave the Schengen area before their visa expires.
Although the countries are divided into groups, each application is assessed individually. The division is only indicative. If you have previously been granted a visa to the Schengen area and have complied with the conditions, it can have a positive impact on your application. The same applies if there are special circumstances for your visit, such as visiting a seriously ill person or attending a funeral.
