What is permanent residency?
Generally, a residence permit is temporary. This means that you are no longer allowed to stay legally in Denmark if it expires. It is therefore important that you extend your residence permit well in advance of its expiration.
A permanent residence permit is not temporary, and therefore it is not necessary to extend it. With a permanent residence permit, you can live in Denmark for the rest of your life, unless you are deported for a crime. Permanent residency also opens up the possibility for you to apply for family reunification - however, this requires that you have lived in Denmark with permanent residency for more than three years.
When can I apply for permanent residency?
You can apply for permanent residency whenever you want. It is important that you apply for permanent residency well in advance of your temporary residence permit expiring. If you suddenly find yourself in a situation where your residence permit has expired before you have received a response to your application for permanent residency, your application will be rejected because you are considered to be residing illegally in Denmark.
You also risk being deported from Denmark and receiving an entry ban. This means that you will be barred from traveling back to Denmark for several years.
